Cash for porn expenses - Bring on the election
Isn’t it time for a change of government?
Gordon Brown would do us all a favour if he went to the country and asked for our opinion of his government in a General Election. Currently, we are facing another year of stagnant politics, where the unpleasant smell of a dying government is bubbling to the surface.
Last week Tony McNulty provided a large bubble as he was exposed for claiming expenses on a second property that is close enough to his first property to cycle in around 45 minutes. In a car, late at night, you could halve this timeframe. Yet, the MP has not apparently broken the rules and is standing by that as his defence. The stench of Mr McNulty taking the ‘proverbial’ surrounds this issue.
Yesterday, Jackie Smith, was caught claiming expenses for porn films and another odious bubble surfaced. She has already disowned her husband’s surname and it would not be surprising to find her disown rather more of him than that in the future. After all, he is the person looking after all her expense claims and is being paid well to do a job that he is not fit for. Perhaps he has his mind on other things?
Is Jackie Smith in a job that she is not fit for? After all, can our Home Secretary now pontificate on any matters relating to sex (prostitution, films, etc.) without being castigated? Can she speak on other matters of morality or honesty without being accused of hypocrisy? Neither she nor her husband can rightly be described as honourable. It is a farce that other MPs have to call her Right Honourable. In a previous generation of the ‘political elite’, Jackie Smith would have resigned.
However, the Prime Minister has backed her, which shows how desperate he is to hold his current team together. The bigger question will be whether Jackie Smith’s electorate will back her when she is next running as a candidate. Perhaps some streams of fresh water will run her particular bubbling pool out of town.
Bring on the election, Mr Brown; bring on the election.
